  • Stock up on reusable shopping bags for all your shopping trips.
  • Carry a reusable mug for grabbing that morning coffee.
  • Choose items that are reusable, recyclable or contain limited or no packaging.
  • Stop and think before throwing something away. Is it truly trash, or can it be donated for reuse?

Our Customers share their Green Living Tips:

Kerry from Everett WA has this to say:

  • We make recycling and composting easy at home by keeping containers in a central and easily accessible area—our garbage, recycling and composting containers are all kept together in one easy-to-access place. To help keep our composting from getting messy, we line the bottom of our compost bucket (a 6 gal Rubbermaid trash can) with two handfuls of shredded paper, then insert a paper grocery bag, and more shredded paper.
  • At home, we store food in reusable containers that are made to last a lifetime. At 40-something, I'm still using Tupperware that my mom gave me over 20 years ago!
  • I also keep two canvas-type shopping bags folded and stored in the door pocket of my car so I’m always prepared for grocery store stops. I use my own bags when shopping for clothes or any other items.
  • Do not avoid composting for fear of flying pests! Our indoor compost collection container does not have a lid and the only time I have ever had a problem with no-see-ums was during very hot weather, which we seldom suffer from here in Western Washington!

I read about the clean cart challenge on your website and thought I would share an idea with all who care about our environment.  I now realize that each individual person on this earth can make a great impact on the lives of those around us and those who will follow by doing one little thing. My one little thing started with offering to collect all recyclable cardboard boxes, plastic containers and glass from my work place. It is set out on my curb side in front of my home every other week knowing that all of this product will never end up in the garbage pile at the end of the year. Since I began this endeavor I now recycle all electronics and wiring from my workplace as well one time a year.  I watched as all 7 of my co-workers agreed to just throw these things in the garbage and spoke up to make one trip on my way home to an electronics recycling location.  My children have noticed the deed and I hope now that they will continue this simple habit when they have the opportunity to make a difference in their future.

Thank you for giving me this opportunity to share my story. I sincerely hope that others begin to think about how they can make this planet a better place for all.

    Truly,
    Lynn Barker
