Residential Garbage Collection

    Containers out by 7:00 AM

Collection times may vary as routing schedules change, and so it is very important to have all containers at the street by 7:00 AM. We appreciate your cooperation.

Place carts out by 7:00 AM or no earlier than 24 hours before collection day.

Place 2 feet apart with lids opening toward the street.

Place 3 feet from obstructions such as cars, trees, fences, mailboxes.

Where available, place your carts in grass planter strips between the curb and sidewalk.

Where grass planter strips are not available, place carts out in such a way that does not restrict the reasonable and safe use of the street, sidewalk, or bicycle lanes by pedestrians, bicyclists, and automobiles.

Remove carts from public property no later than 24 hours after your collection day.

When possible, trucks with robotic arms will lift, empty and replace the carts without the drivers leaving the trucks, reducing safety hazards and traffic congestion.

Weight Limit 65 Pounds (Overweight containers will not be emptied)
    • Cans, bins, bundles and carts up to 35-gallon size are lifted and emptied by hand. For your safety and the safety of your collectors, please limit each 35-gallon unit to no more than 65 pounds.
    • Larger carts are lifted mechanically, and are limited to 180 pounds.

    Extra Garbage

Garbage collected in excess of your current monthly service level (lid must be closed) will incur extra charges of $11.22 per unit (container, box or bag up to 32-gallons by volume), per pickup.

Put extra garbage in securely tied plastic bags or 32-gallon cans w/lid and handles (65 lb. limit) and place next to garbage cart. Extra garbage must be labeled "Garbage".

If you often have extra garbage, you may want to increase your garbage container size to avoid overflow and extra garbage charges.

    Bulky Items

Bulky items like mattresses, appliances, console televisions, furniture and building materials can be picked up by special arrangement. Contact the City of Auburn Utility - 253 931-3038.

    Temporary Garbage Services

Large containers are available for temporary projects such as remodeling and construction. Contact the City of Auburn Utility Customer Service for Temporary Garbage at 253-931-3038 (M-F) 7:30 AM - 5:30 PM. Contact Waste Management at 1-800-592-9995 for other temporary containers (recycling, compostables, CDL).

    Reduce Your Garbage Costs!

Garbage Rates vary according to cart size.
Recycling and yard waste collection can help reduce your garbage enough that you may be able to order a smaller size and lower your garbage bills.

    Garbage Service is Required

Local ordinance requires all residents to subscribe to garbage and recycling collection in order to maintain public health, prevent public litter, and preserve natural resources.
