Curbside Garbage Service

In 1997, the City of Algona passed an ordinance requiring all residents to subscribe to garbage and recycling collection in order to maintain public health, prevent public litter, and preserve natural resources.

Beginning in January 2008, the city implemented convenient new citywide curbside collection. As a part of the expanded service, Waste Management delivered wheeled garbage and recycling carts to all residences.

New customers who hadn't already subscribed to curbside garbage collection received:

  • A 35-gallon black-lidded garbage cart, which is emptied at the curb every week on Wednesday or Thursday*. (If the amount of garbage you generate requires a smaller or larger cart, or less frequent collection, click here to order a different size.)
  • A 64-gallon blue-lidded recycling cart, which is emptied every other week at no extra charge on your garbage bill. Additional clean recyclables in plastic bins or cardboard boxes are accepted at no charge.
  • A collection guidelines packet attached to the recycling cart. Please review the guidelines carefully and keep them for future reference.

Residents may also subscribe to food & yard waste collection for an additional fee. The guidelines delivered with your recycling cart provide more information about food & yard waste collection..

*Set Out Day:

Algona curbside collection is divided into two collection days: Wednesday and Thursday. Collection days are posted on garbage cart lids.

Wednesday Collection:
West of Algona Blvd; South of 1st Ave.

Thursday Collection:
East of Algona Blvd; North of 1st Ave

Set Out Time 6 AM

Have your collection containers at the street by 6:00 am.

Weight Limit 65 Pounds (Overweight containers will not be emptied)

  • Cans, bins, bundles and carts up to 32-gallon size are lifted and emptied by hand. For your safety and the safety of your collectors, please limit each 32-gallon unit to no more than 65 pounds.
  • Larger carts are lifted mechanically, and are limited to 200 pounds.

Place Carts:
  • Two (2) feet apart
  • At least three (3) feet from cars, trees, mailboxes, fences
  • Cart wheels as close to the curb as possible
  • Cart lids opening toward street

When possible, trucks with robotic arms will lift, empty and replace the carts without the drivers leaving the trucks, reducing safety hazards and traffic congestion.

Please remove all containers from the street as soon as possible after collection.
